👋 Welcome to SEMH Education!
Every week, I share insights, strategies, and tips from my experience working with children and professionals on social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) in education. This week, we’re exploring what’s changing with the newsletter and also how my posting schedule will be changing!
Let me know you’re here! Clicking the ♥️ button or pressing the ‘L’ key on your keyboard shows me you’re here and enjoying my content 😊.
Over the past year, writing this newsletter has been one of the most rewarding parts of my week. Thank you to all of you 🤗
I started by writing this newsletter as a reminder to myself about certain topics. I’ve always found that writing (mainly typing) things down helps me retain knowledge!
My first few posts were exactly that… I just took a topic I was interested in at the time. Put that as the heading and just typed away!
Then something completely unexpected happened… You started subscribing…
I had no idea that any of my posts would resonate with anyone on here.
As we started building our little community, I chopped and changed the newsletter style and structure until I was happy with it. I’ll probably chop and change it again in the future, sorry in advance! 🤣
Fast forward 53 weeks, and we’re here! We’ve built a brilliant community of educators, leaders, and professionals, parents & carers who care deeply about improving outcomes for all children and young people, including those with SEMH needs, navigating the complexities of behaviour policies, routines, regulation and crisis behaviours.
At the time of writing, we’re a community of 330! I couldn’t imagine standing in front of you all and talking to you every Sunday! I don’t think I’ve ever presented to more than 40 people at once before 🤣
Those of you with a newsletter yourself will know you can go into your settings and look at the date people subscribed and the level of engagement they have with your Newsletter.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank some people who have been here since I was shouting into the void and figuring this Newsletter thing out!
You’re still here now, and that means a lot, so thank you!
Thank you to: My mother (obviously 🤣), Jack, Megan, Laura, Mary, Jenny, Joey, June, rf, Leona, Mark G, Emily, Stephanie, Steph, Adrian, Daisy, Eve, Kathleen, Saloni
I’m so grateful for all 330 of you; the feedback you give me on every post is invaluable! If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be writing this Newsletter today.
So what’s all this about?
I’ve decided to change and update the Newsletter to offer more insights, tips, tricks and my own personal takes on policies, guidance, podcasts, books and other educational topics.
How am I going to do that?
📰 Introducing Paid Subscriptions
Starting on 1st June 2025, I’m offering the option to become a paid subscriber to SEMH Education.
Why?
Because there’s so much more we can do together.
Paid subscriptions will allow me to:
Deliver deeper, more strategic insights you can use immediately.
Develop scripts, occasional templates, and toolkits to save you time.
Create training materials and briefing notes to take to your staff meetings.
Build a small, engaged community of people serious about leading positive change.
Provide in-depth case studies about SEMH / SEND children.
Offer a Chat for general support
Create presentations & other content.
This will also help sustain the work I'm doing, ensuring I can keep bringing you high-quality content every week, alongside growing new resources and opportunities.
🔬 What Paid Subscribers Will Get: 📝
Twice-monthly exclusive posts: including advanced SEMH strategies, information to take to staff briefings, deep-dive case studies, and discounts on future online presentations.
Access to new resources before they are released more widely.
Occasional subscriber-only Q&As and opportunities to shape future content.
Chat access, in which we can unpick current topics in education.
Discounts on any other content provided outside of Substack.
🆓 Free Posts Will Continue!
Nothing is changing for free subscribers. You’ll still receive a thoughtful, practical post every week, just as you always have!
Paid subscribers will simply get even more depth, tools, and support to help them lead change in their settings.
📆 1st Year Discount: Limited Offer
As a thank-you to early supporters, I’m offering a 35% discount.
If you subscribe BEFORE 1st July 2025, you’ll get a subscription at a 35% discount all year! After that, subscriptions will move to the regular price.
Subscribe Now and Claim the 35% Discount!
The first paid newsletter will be on Wednesday, the 4th of June 2025. It will focus on how schools can amend their behaviour policies to a more trauma-informed approach.
⏰ Posting Schedule
My posting schedule will follow the pattern below:
The free posts will most likely become more concise, and any free posts that resonate well with everyone will get further in-depth paid posts. For example, I’m currently writing more in-depth about each of the 6 stages of crisis for paid subscribers.
Sunday posts will remain at 9.30 am. The Wednesday post will also start at 9.30 am but will be subject to change. As I’m aware that teachers are already well into their daily routines by 9.30!
If you have any other thoughts about the Wednesday time, please let me know! Or if you think it should be another day, let me know!
💭 Final Thoughts
Thank you again for being part of this growing community.
I'm so excited for the next chapter of this Newsletter and to keep building something special with you all!
If you have any questions at all, just hit reply. I read every message.
P.S. I'm always open to hearing what would be most valuable for you as a paid subscriber. If there’s something you’d love to see, a particular guide, a training pack, a resource, reply and let me know!
Congratulations Kieran, I am an avid reader (and re-stacker) of SEMH Education. You offer such insightful and considered perspectives which place the learner (and their educators) at the heart. It is clear that the wealth of knowledge and expertise which you share is built on lived experience and reflective practice. Your subscribers are guaranteed to gain so many ideas and practical suggestions which will have a direct positive impact on pupils, teaching teams and learning environments.
I am looking forward to seeing your following continue to grow!
